I am María Meroño Fernández

Although I am a freelance translator specialized in audiovisual and literary translation, I feel a great fascination for all the more creative and humanistic fields of this discipline, such as musical or gastronomic translation, among others.

A great combined passion for languages and literature was what drove me to pursue a degree in Translation and Interpreting (English) at the University of Murcia from 2017 to 2021.

A great combined passion for languages and literature was what drove me to pursue a degree in Translation and Interpreting (English) at the University of Murcia from 2017 to 2021.

Her varied curriculum introduced me to areas I did not expect to enjoy, such as economic, technical or legal translation and even interpreting, both bilateral and consecutive and simultaneous.

Literary and audiovisual

Although all of them surprised me because of the interest they aroused in me, the ones that caught my attention the most were literary and audiovisual, and even one that I had not anticipated, the musical, so much so that I dedicated my dissertation, The translation of musical theater: Hamilton, to the study of this discipline.

Musical translation

Subsequently, I took the Master’s degree in Creative and Humanistic Translation at the Universitat de València between 2021 and 2022 and, interested again in musical translation, I delved even deeper into it in my TFM, entitled Fundamentos en la traducción del teatro musical: El caso de Six(Fundamentals of musical theater translation: The case of Six).

Professionally, I am very restless. During my undergraduate studies, I did an internship at Editum publishing house, where I participated in the translation project of Las Cantigas de Santa María, in addition to translating legal, literary and general texts and proofreading a web page. Before I finished my degree I was already giving private English classes to people of different levels and with different objectives (preparation for Cambridge exams, EOI, conversation classes or to reinforce the language).

During my master’s degree, I did an internship at Bunker Books publishing house, where I worked as a proofreader and stylistic reviewer with such success that my tutor wrote me a letter of recommendation. As I had focused on the publishing world and wanted to try my hand in the audiovisual field, I did an extracurricular internship at the translation agency Interpunct, with whom I still collaborate today. As soon as I finished my master’s degree, I started working in one of the fields I like the most, audiovisual translation, as a freelancer.

As I have already mentioned, languages are one of my great loves. Currently, in addition to being a native Spanish speaker, I have full professional competence in English (Cambridge C2 Proficiency certificate) and French and notions of Spanish sign language, but I hope to continue growing in this field. Talking about other skills, I have experience with the Office package and I handle programs such as Subtitle Edit and Subtitle Workshop, MR2-Dubbing and, to a lesser extent, Trados and Omega-T.
